A Look Into Malaysia’s eCommerce Scene in 2012

📕 |

February 20, 2013

| Jan Wong

So the team and I at OpenMinds Resources recently put together our findings we conducted on the local eCommerce scene into an infographic and discovered a number of stuff that did surprise a bunch of us.

We found that guys tend to make online purchases more than the fairer gender, payment via cash on delivery out weighs bank transfers and exclusive deals doesn’t necessarily command an immediate purchase (despite us Malaysians being quite crazy over bargains). You can read about the findings here or directly from the infographic below (click for larger image):

eCommerce scene in malaysia 2012

Where do we go from here?

If your business is situated in Malaysia or are facing a similar market outlook, here are 5 points to consider to turn these findings to your advantage:

#1: Offer credit card checkout options

This may seem obvious but most small sized online retailers do not offer such options to their customers for various reasons including high transaction fees and technical complexities.

What you may want to explore is to utilize a credible payment gateway such as PayPal, iPay88 or MOL Pay in Malaysia as setting them up aren’t difficult at all. As for the high transaction fees, I’d rather not lose out on the 58%.

#2: Consider meetups to drive sales

The biggest disadvantage of an online store to the customers is the inability to physically see and feel the product. Having that said, a no obligation meetup to showcase your products may not be a bad idea though costly to you at first.

What you want to achieve here is to boost your credibility. I recently made online purchase of a shirt myself and I was pleasantly surprise that the retailer was more than happy to provide an exchange of size at no additional cost should it not fit me.

#3: Be detailed when providing product info

Instead of putting all your effort in writing a sales pitch for your product, try to be descriptive. Saying your product can change the world in a click and how awesome and limited they are won’t cut it. Instead, say HOW it can change the world and in what way will it function will do a whole lot better.

Of course, the price has to be clear too. Nothing annoys a customer off more than having an unclear pricing mechanism.

#4: Consider REAL product reviews

One of the reasons why sites such as Amazon.com and TripAdvisor.com are loved by many is because of its reviews. Real, honest reviews by fellow customers.

I know this sounds like a risk to many retailers but it works. Not only you’re able to obtain real feedback from your customers, you’re getting them to do the selling for you!

user submitted photos as product reviews

BlackMilk Clothing turns real reviews up a notch by encouraging customers to submit a photo of themselves in the dresses they sell. This not only shows other customers how that dress may look like on them, but not also have a user-generated pool of photos. Brilliant!

#5: Create exclusive offers… and gain from it!

Group deals are still pretty big over here in Malaysia and that’s great for us consumers. The problem is that retailers tend to rely on these deals as a means to drive sales and eventually find that these deals are not sustainable, which is true.

Don’t just create an offer and throw it off the street. Ask yourself, how can you maximize it to your benefit? Could it be a good opportunity to grow subscribers? To amass reviews or feedback? To get them to bring their family and friends along?

What are some other observations you’re able to gather from this research? Would love to hear from you!

Why Do Fans Subscribe to Your Facebook Page?

📕 |

October 27, 2010

| Jan Wong

Now that we’ve looked at why fans unsubscribe (unfollow) your Facebook page, let’s check out how were they converted in becoming your fan in the first place:

Why do fans subscribe to your facebook fan pageLooking at the results above, 75% of the attraction should come from you. This shows that fans are still attracted to what you can offer them by following you and 75% is huge! This also means that attraction strategy is vital to motivate fans to follow you, debunking the myth of “the word will spread just being on Facebook”. See what existing businesses have done to command attention on their Facebook page.

These three “conversion points” pointed out by the survey does not end there. It actually creates a guide on how businesses and brands can create their own social media strategy to MAXIMIZE RESULTS and leverage upon ALL three points above by including:

1. A Driving Vehicle

This is the actual promotional campaign and most businesses are capable of this pretty well – Facebook links plastered everywhere, ongoing contests, weekly giveaways, sweepstakes, webinars, exclusive contents and the list goes on; which is perhaps why 75% of the people are attracted to subscribe to you – you’ve captured their attention. Now what?

2. A Reason to Share

You’ve attracted the masses and now it’s the time to tap into your fans’ networks! Give them a reason to share you with their friends. Organize a bring-a-friend day to your shop, reward active fans, provide quality content or outrageous offers – anything that involves people getting people. Get them involved, create conversations and get your fans to co-promote. Remember, it’s a world-of-mouth on social networks!

3. An Edge to be Found

This may be a little trickier than the above but not the least important. This approach has the potential to draw in those that may not be active on Facebook, those that are skeptical of advertising and even those who think Google is the Internet. This strategy utilizes external resources to draw attention to your business.

This can be done by participating in forums, discussion rooms, local happening sites, blogs and microsites. Also if you’re familiar with SEO, it will definitely provide an additional edge to be ranked highly on search engines. These avenues creates additional content over the internet providing more information and value to your prospects / customers / fans.

The Social Media Strategy

There are tons of ways going about in social media and there really isn’t a perfect formula to success. Every business and brand has to take time and effort to identify what works and doesn’t for them. However, keeping in mind the 3 Conversion Points above in your social media strategy should assist you in what needs to be covered and done.

Why Do Fans Unsubscribe from Your Facebook Page?

📕 |

October 20, 2010

| Jan Wong

We’ve been talking a lot about how to attract fans on Facebook, engaging them and retaining them but do you know what causes them to ‘un-follow’ or ‘un-fan’ your page? Do you know that they WILL stop subscribing to your page?

Take a look at the results of a recent survey:

why do fans unfollow facebook page32% indicated that they decided to abandon your page because your brand does not excite them anymore. Perhaps your competitor became more appealing, or they have simply outgrown your brand, or you’ve lost your ‘spark’ that drew them to you on Day 1.

Whatever the reason is, 32% sure is a figure to watch out for and you may want to consider monitoring the growth / decline of your fan base. If it is increasing day-by-day, identify what interests them and what keeps them and keep at it. If it is declining, it’s time to examine what went wrong. Throw a survey or hold a discussion – find out what are your fans looking for and improve on it.

It is also interesting to note that fans are also turned off if a page is updated with new posts too often. Too much information may be seen as spamming and you definitely do not want your fans to perceive it that way. The general rule of thumb is 2-3 updates, spaced out throughout the day (e.g. 1 morning, 1 afternoon, 1 night) and ensure that it is quality content (related articles, updates, reports, etc). Of course, it still comes down to how your fans respond to your updates and each page differs from another. Take sometime to spot trends among your fans – you won’t go wrong that way.

“You may want to watch out for this one as fans can also opt to hide your notifications / updates on their news feed apart from unsubscribing if they are unhappy.”

Now you know what drives your fans to unsubscribe from your page. Want to know what drives them to subscribe to your page? That will be next!

A Report-Filled Week

📕 |

September 25, 2010

| Jan Wong

In case you’re wondering – yes, this site also reveals part of my happenings in life, injecting a little bit more flavour to the site as a whole; something lighter than the usual information dosage, especially for the weekend :)

MOFEW 2010 Official ReportIt has been about a month now since MOFEW 2010 and lots of back-end work have took place ever since – compiling of data, closing of accounts and various follow-up duties. The result? We finally managed to get the Official MOFEW 2010 Report up and it can be downloaded over here (5mb)! This 32-page report contains the many aspects of the project including statistics, pictures, feedbacks, media write-ups and also a special page highlighting some very interesting facts of MOFEW! I’m sure glad it’s all done especially when it took out an entire month! Have a look at the report!

Do take a look at what the Malaysia’s Online Fashion Entrepreneurs’ Weekend is all about on the official Facebook page and for pictures, too!

Legend of the GuardiansDespite the busy schedule, thankfully, I was still able sneak some time out for the premiere of Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hoole in 3D last Monday at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. It was a very good movie with a decent storyline, couple of laugh-worthy scenes, awesome visual graphics and a pretty catchy theme song by Owl City! If you’re intending to watch it, 3D is the way to go for this one! Oh, the tickets were free, sponsored by Advertlets, an Asian blog advertising network located in Malaysia.

Group picture after the movie

Looking ahead, I’m sure it’s gonna be yet another amazing week with great opportunities to be unfold! There are several projects on the way and they’ll will be leveraging on the power of social media for a greater measure of success. It’s gonna be really exciting to work with companies that sees social media as an important element to their business and is willing to take the step to make the change. Will be sharing more on it when it is confirmed! For now, it’s the weekend!

Speaking of social media, I can’t help but to share this video I stumbled upon on YouTube:

Have a great weekend ahead!
